Wright Tree Service is committed to the longevity and preservation of urban trees. Our Arborists are trained to ensure we protect Ottawa’s natural beauty

Situations may arise when a tree must be removed, they may die, become hazardous or be growing in a poor location. If this is the case a free consultation with one of our Arborists will help you determine the best course of action.

Our Arborists are well informed and up to date with all the by-laws, including the newest update which came into effect on January 1, 2021, and will use this knowledge to advise you accordingly. We work with the City of Ottawa regularly, and can manage the permit process on your behalf.

Under the Tree Protection By-law, the following trees cannot be removed without a tree permit from the City:

  • Trees measuring 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height within the inner urban area (urban lands inside the Greenbelt).

The by-law also provides exemptions for certain types of activities, such as normal farm practices, maintenance of power lines, aggregate extraction in accordance with provincial regulations, and professional surveying.

The Ottawa tree protection by-laws cover three distinct areas. These areas are classified as urban, suburban, and rural. Each area has slightly modified by-laws for tree protection.

  • Urban areas are areas with great population numbers in small spaces like cities. These areas are Ottawa, Nepean, and Vanier.
  • Suburban areas are outlying parts of cities that consist of many communities. These areas are Kanata, Orleans, Barrhaven, Stittsville, Greely, and Manotick.
  • Rural areas are more spread out communities with a low population in a great area. These areas are the greater Ottawa area.

Arborist reports are not always essential for tree removals in Ottawa, however, nothing bad can come from an arborist report. An arborist report allows you to assess your tree removal and ensure that this is the best decision for your tree. Your tree will be assessed for risk of falling, potential danger, and an arborist can help you determine if you will need a permit for the removal.
